It’s an industrial city near Belgium. As there are some international trains for Belgium and UK, this city is important for the transportation. In addition, Charles de Gaulle, the 18th president in France, was born in this city. The bakery “Paul” began the business in Lille. The flea market in September is the most famous and biggest market in France.

【Start】
①Lille Flandres Station

★Go straight on Faidherbe St in front of the station for 5 minutes. You arrive at Theater Square.

②Old Stock Exchange

★Go to Clef St beside the theatre for 10 minutes.

③Hospice Comtesse Museum

★Continue to walk on Monnaie St in front of the museum and turn left at the first crossroad. Then, go to the street and turn left at the first crossroad. It takes 10 minutes.

④Treille Cathedral

★Go to Cirque St in front of the cathedral and turn right at the dead end. Then, turn left immediately to go back to Theatre Square. Go to Bourse St from the square. It takes 10 minutes by walk.

★Go to Neuve St from the square and turn right at the first crossroad to go to Béthune St as far as Republic Square. It takes 10 minutes by walk.

★Go straight on Faidherbe St in front of the station for 5 minutes. You arrive at Theater Square.

It is a building with many windows surrounded by yellow and red borders. Although you can’t go inside, a used book market is held in the courtyard.

Built in 1237, it is a former almshouse located in an open square. Currently, it is a museum where you can see furniture and paintings. The blue tiles in the kitchen and stairs are a highlight.

④Treille Cathedral

It is a modern-looking cathedral. When you enter, you will see a red object hanging from the ceiling. When you look back, the entrance wall glows brown in the sunlight, making it look magical. Unique works such as sculptures crawling on the ground and sculptures holding up children are also on display.


★Go to Cirque St in front of the cathedral and turn right at the dead end. Then, turn left immediately to go back to Theatre Square. Go to Bourse St from the square. It takes 10 minutes by walk.


⑤Général de Gaule Square

It’s a large square in the center of town, lined with cute houses that give you a Belgian atmosphere.

The museum is a former palace that has been renovated. It consists of three floors, from the ancient underground to the upper floors where you can see modern works. There are also many works by Impressionists such as Rubens and Monet. On the wall of the stairs leading down to the basement, there is a green work made entirely of beetles, which is similar to the Royal Palace of Brussels.

It is a tower adjacent to the city hall, and the bell towers in this region, which also includes Belgium, are collectively registered as a World Heritage Site. You can get a panoramic view of the city from the top of the tower, but each time there is a capacity of 17 people, so if you miss your turn you will have to wait 30 minutes for your next turn.

⑪Lille Citadel

It is a huge fortress on the outskirts of the city, and the interior can only be visited by guided tours. There is a park around the fort, so it’s a good place to take a leisurely stroll. There is also a zoo. Guided tours cost 16euros (reservation required) and are held twice on Sundays from April to October, excluding September, from 3pm to 3h45pm and from 4h30pm to 5h15pm. Reservations can be made at the tourist information center.
