①Auxerre-St-Gervais Station

★Go to Jules Ferry St in front of the station and pass a bridge. Then, turn right and walk by the river. It takes 20 minutes by walk.

②Tourist Information Center

★Continue to walk by the river for 5 minutes.

③Saint-Nicolas Square

★Go to Yonne St and turn right at the first crossroad. It takes 5 minutes.

④Saint-Germain Abbey

★Go to Lycée Jacques Amyot St and turn left at the first crossroad. Go straight on Etang Saint-Vigile St. It takes 10 minutes.

⑤St-Etienne Cathedral

★Go to Fourier St in front of the cathedral. When you arrive at Cordeliers Square, turn left and go to Hôtel de Ville Square. Then, turn right in the square. It takes 10 minutes.

⑥Clock Tower

★Continue to walk on the street and turn left at the end. It takes 10 minutes.

⑦Cadet Roussel Fountain

★Go back to the cathedral with the same route. Then, go to Lebeuf St. when you go down the street, you arrive at the tourist information center. Return to the station with the same route. It takes 30 minutes.

It is a square with rows of terraces and a fountain in the center. On one wall of the square is a monument to Archbishop Myre.

④Saint-Germain Abbey

It is a Benedictine monastery built in the 6th century. The reason why the monastery and the bell tower are separated is because the part that connected them was once destroyed. Inside, you can see a church with beautiful stained glass and a quarry. A paid guided tour takes you to the underground altar, home to France’s oldest Christian frescoes. The adjacent museum mainly exhibits sculptures from ancient Rome to the Middle Ages.

This is a Gothic style cathedral completed in the 16th century. The three rose windows in the interior and the stained glass on the wall surrounding the inner shrine are colorful and very beautiful. The fresco of “Christ on a White Horse” in the underground festival room is a must-see.


★Go to Fourier St in front of the cathedral. When you arrive at Cordeliers Square, turn left and go to Hôtel de Ville Square. Then, turn right in the square. It takes 10 minutes.


⑥Clock Tower

The clock tower in the old town. Built in the 15th century, it was first used as a prison bell, but later was used as a clock tower. It was destroyed by fire in 1825, but restoration was completed in 1893. This is a historic clock tower that has been watching over this town, keeping time for over 500 years.

A fountain located in a square surrounded by traditional buildings. Above the fountain is a monument to the person who inspired the famous French song “Cadet Rousselle”. He is said to have lived in this town since he was 20 years old.
