【City description】

This is a small town which was located on the border of the Duchy of Brittany before. The castle was constructed in the 11th century to protect the town from the enemies. But it was destroyed by wars and there are only 13 towers and walls at present. When you go to the slope, you can the castle entirely. There is a small town on the top and several museums.

Access

To get to Fougères, take a bus from the bus terminal in front of Rennes Station.

The bus you will be taking is line 9a, which starts at Rennes Station, so it will be your last stop on the way back. Tickets can be purchased at the bus terminal or from the bus driver (5 euros one way).

This fortress protected the border until it was annexed by France in the 16th century. There is nothing left of the castle itself, which has been protected for many years, but only the 13 towers and walls. Therefore, the main way to see the castle is to climb up the towers and castle walls, but the views from each tower show a different side of the castle.

This bell tower has been telling the time in this town for over 600 years. It is the oldest existing structure in Brittany. It is characterized by its octagonal blue roof decorated with gargoyles.

This is a small museum located in the back of a watch shop. You can see various types of clocks, from pendulums to pendulums. Sometimes you can even watch craftsmen create watches in the atelier.

This is a Gothic style church built in the 12th century. After that, it was renovated several times in the 15th and 16th centuries, and bell towers of different architectural styles were built next to it. The interior is simple, but the stained glass is rich in color. Some of the stained glass windows date back to the 12th century and are among the oldest in Brittany. You can go up the bell tower for 2 euros, but if you have a ticket to the Castle of Fougeres you can go up for free.
