【City description】

It’s the principal city in the Basque region between France and Spain. We can find regional and traditional green and red buildings. In addition, this city is famous because it’s the first city where the chocolate was introduced in France. So, there are famous chocolate shops in the city and a factory in urban. We call the west of the river Grand Bayonne and the east Petit Bayonne. The Raw ham is also famous as regional food.

①Bayonne Station

★Go to Maubec St in front of the station and pass a bridge. Then, turn right to go to Léon Bonnat Avenue. When you arrive at a parking on the left hand, enter there. It takes 20 minutes by walk.

②Tourist Information Center

★Continue to walk in the parking by the end.

③Botanical Garden

★Leave the garden by the Poterne gate.

④Old Castle

★Turn right to go to Gouverneurs St.

⑤Ste-Marie Cathedral

★You walk in the center street. Continue to walk on the street and turn right. Then, turn left at the first crossroad and go down Espagne St. Go to Argenterie St and turn left at the first crossroad. Turn right at the first crossroad. It takes 15 minutes.

⑥Chocolat Cazenave (chocolate shop and café)

★Continue to walk on the street and turn right at Liberté Square. Go to Amiral Dubourdieu St beside a river while looking at buildings in Basque style. When you go thorough a market hall, pass a bridge and go straight. It takes 20 minutes.

⑦New Castle

★Proceed to the church on your right with the castle in the background.

⑧St-André Church

★Go to Marengo St and turn right before a bridge. It takes 5 minutes.

⑨Basque Museum

★Passe the bridge and return to the station with the same route. It takes 20 minutes.

⑩Atelier of the Chocolate

★Take a bus of the line A2 or 11 and get off at the bus stop Jean Jaurès (⑪ on the map). When you continue to walk on the street, you’ll find a sign of this atelier at the first crossroad. As it’s not on the avenue, you should verifier the destination before the visit.

The cathedral of Grand Bayonne is registered as a World Heritage Site as one of the sacred places of pilgrimage. It was once a Romanesque building, but after it disappeared, it was rebuilt as a Gothic building. The two pointed spires are a symbol that can be seen from a distance. The view looking up from the corridor is also a must-see.


★You walk in the center street. Continue to walk on the street and turn right. Then, turn left at the first crossroad and go down Espagne St. Go to Argenterie St and turn left at the first crossroad. Turn right at the first crossroad. It takes 15 minutes.
