City description

Brienz is a small town located on the east side of Lake Brienz of the same name. The town itself is not a tourist destination, but many people visit because there is a mountain railway station. The town is lined with half-timbered houses typical of Switzerland. Wood carving is a specialty of the town, and it actually has ties to Japan.

【Start】

After leaving the station, turn right and you will see the mountain train station on your immediate left.

②Brienz BRB Train Station

Turn right after leaving the station ⇒ Continue straight for a while ⇒ You will see the museum on your right

③Swiss Woodcarving Museum

Continue along the road ⇒ When you reach the left curve, go up the slope on the right

④Brunngasse Street

①Brienz Station

After leaving the station, turn right and you will see the mountain train station on your immediate left.


②Brienz BRB Train Station

This is the station of the mountain train that goes to Rothorn (2252m above sea level). This train is still a steam locomotive since it opened in 1892, and is the only one in Switzerland. There is also Planalp station (1341m) between Brienz and the summit of Rothorn, so you can get off there.

Time required
Each section takes 30 minutes. Therefore, the round trip travel time between Brienz and Rothorn is 2 hours.

③Swiss Woodcarving Museum

Close: November – April

This museum exhibits various woodcarvings from Brienz, known as the home of woodcarvings. In fact, it is said that the wooden bear carvings of Hokkaido originated from a wooden bear carving purchased in Brienz. The museum also exhibits animal carvings and furniture with intricate decorations.

④Brunngasse Street

This street has been called the most beautiful in Europe. It is lined on both sides with Swiss half-timbered houses and features sculptural decorations typical of Brienz.
