This castle on the shores of Lake Geneva dates back to the 12th century and is one of the most popular tourist spots in Switzerland. It was expanded during the time of the House of Savoy, and the basement was even used as a prison, and Byron’s famous poem “The Prisoner of Chillon” is about a Genevan reformer who was actually imprisoned there. As the castle was built on top of a rocky area, the basement also blends in with the building and the rocks. Inside the castle, life at the time has been recreated, and although there is little furniture, you can see the decorations on the walls and ceilings, as well as soldiers’ armor. After your tour, we recommend taking a walk near the lake.
