②Landsgemeinde Square
Landsgemeindeplatz

This is the largest square in the village, surrounded by buildings with cute decorations. There is a statue with one hand raised in the square, which represents the open-air parliament called Landsgemeinde, which all villagers participate in every April. It used to be held in many Swiss municipalities, but there are few places where it is held now. It is traditional to carry a saber on your waist.
Let’s try Appenzell’s famous sweets!!
Appenzell is famous for a sweet called Bärli-Biber. It is a baked pastry with almond paste inside a sponge. You can find it in supermarkets in Zurich, even if you are not in Appenzell.

This is the largest church in the village. The church, which dates back to the 11th century, was expanded and rebuilt four times in the 19th century to its current form, so it is a mixture of Gothic, Baroque, and Neoclassical styles. The clock tower is decorated with a man with one hand raised, representing the Landsgemeinde. The interior is quite different from the simple exterior, with lavish decorations incorporating the Rococo style. The ceiling paintings are also intricately painted and are so captivating that you will want to stare at them carefully.
