②Milan Cathedral
Duomo
Time required: 1 h
Admission fee: 8 – 22 euros
Opening hour: 9 am – 7 pm
Close: No
The Duomo is a Gothic church that is the second largest in the world after St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican, and is an iconic building of Milan. Construction began in 1386 on the site of the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore, but it ran into difficulties and was finally completed in the 19th century by order of Napoleon, who conquered Milan. The pincushion-like exterior is made up of 135 spires, each of which has a sculpture of a saint on it. The tallest of these has a golden statue of Mary on top, and it was once forbidden to build buildings taller than that. The interior features black stone walls, a geometric floor, and numerous stained glass windows. Admission fees vary depending on the area you visit, as follows:
1. Cathedral + Duomo Museum + San Gottardo Church: 8 euros (closed on Wednesdays)
2. ① + inner part of the Cathedral: 10 euros
3. Duomo rooftop: (stairs 13 euros, elevator 15 euros)
4. ① + ③ stairs: 16 euros
5. ① + ③ elevator: 22 euros
The Duomo Museum is located on the right side of the main entrance of the Duomo, and the tour route includes the Church of San Gottardo. If you want to visit the museum as well, add an hour to your tour time. To get to the rooftop, go around the outside of the Duomo to the rear of the building and go up through the entrance. There are various price plans, which can be confusing, but if you want to visit the cathedral and go up to the rooftop, we recommend ①, and if you want to see the cathedral and go up to the rooftop, we recommend ④ or ⑤. When it is crowded, you will have to wait in a long line just to enter the cathedral, so we recommend going first thing in the morning. Tickets can be purchased from the following website, and if you want to buy them on site, there is a ticket office near the Duomo Museum.
