【City description】
Aomori City is a city facing the sea and developed as a port town during the Edo period. Every August, the Nebuta Festival, one of the three major festivals in the Tohoku region, is held and the city is crowded with many tourists. We will introduce a model itinerary that will take you around the city’s popular tourist spots, including facilities that have Nebuta Festival exhibits even outside of the festival season.

【Start】①Aomori Station

When you leave the station and go left, you will see a modern brown building.

Leave the building and go left. Turn left at the third intersection and you will see a triangular building. Enter that building.

There is a park at the back of the building.

After leaving the park, turn left and continue on until you come to a large intersection, from which you turn right. Turn right at the third traffic light and you will find the shrine at the end of the road.

Once you leave the shrine, go right, turn right at the first intersection and go straight to return to the station.

②Nebuta Museum WA RASSE

Completed in 2011, this facility allows you to learn about the history and production of Nebuta. Several large Nebuta floats that were actually used in the Nebuta Festival are on display, and you can look inside from underneath and even actually touch some of them.
In addition to seeing the music and jumping performances, there are times when you can also try them out. So if you’re interested, it’s best to check the website in advance.

This is a product center where you can buy souvenirs from Aomori. On the first floor there is a souvenir shop and a food and drink corner, as well as a specialty store selling various types of apple pies. On the second floor there is a theater where you can see the charm of Aomori through a 360° screen that surrounds you throughout the four seasons, and on the 13th floor there is an observation deck that offers a panoramic view of Aomori’s sea and town.

④Aoiumi Park

Admission fee:0 yen
This is a park facing the sea in Aomori. If you visit between May and August, you will find the Nebuta Hut Lasseland, a factory where Nebuta floats are made, and you can see how they are made.

⑤Utou Shrine

This shrine is located where Utou village once stood, the birthplace of Aomori City. It is said that it originally began as a shrine to the Three Munakata Goddesses as goddesses of the sea, in the hope of safe voyages, and was rebuilt by Sakanoue no Tamuramaro in 807. The shrine is said to grant blessings such as safety in the home, safety on the roads, and prosperity in business. Behind the shrine is a swamp that is a remnant of the past, and the Ryujin Water nearby is said to be a power spot for jobs related to water.
