Sendai City, the prefectural capital of Miyagi Prefecture, is famous as the town ruled by the Sengoku warlord Date Masamune. Many popular tourist spots remain as vestiges of this time, such as the ruins of Sendai Castle and Zuihoden Temple. We also recommend the city’s nationally famous specialty dishes, such as beef tongue and Zunda.

The mausoleum where Date Masamune rests is designated as a national treasure. It was built on Kyogenmine by Date Tadamune, the second feudal lord, in accordance with Masamune’s will, and faces the main citadel of Sendai Castle, which we will visit later. The Momoyama-style temple is gorgeous and very beautiful, and it also contains the mausoleums of the second feudal lord (Kansendo) and the third feudal lord (Zennoden), which are built facing Zuihoden. This is the site of the castle built by Date Masamune, located on top of a mountain about 130 meters above sea level, and the famous Date Masamune statue is also located here. I recommend taking the Loople Sendai bus, which will take you straight to the top of the mountain. It is lit up at night, and there are special performances every 30 minutes that change with the season, so the night view from here is beautiful.

The main citadel, which once stood there, was completed in 1602 after the Battle of Sekigahara, but was almost completely destroyed by fire in 1882. A castle tower was not built to avoid alarming Tokugawa Ieyasu, and the remains of a large hall measuring approximately 430 tatami mats remain on the site at the top of the mountain.

The nearby Sendai Castle Museum has a small exhibition of related materials. The Ninomaru area is now the Kawauchi Campus of Tohoku University, and the Sannomaru area is now the Sendai City Museum, which we will visit later. Miyagi Prefectural Gokoku Shrine is located on the summit, where about 56,000 people who died in battles after the Meiji Restoration are enshrined.
