②Yokohama Chinatown

Time required : 1 h
This popular Yokohama tourist spot has around 630 shops, of which about one third are Chinese restaurants. Not only can you try food from all over China, but you can also eat your way around, so it’s a popular spot with many tourists.
There are a total of 10 gates (Pailou) like the one we passed at the beginning, and it’s fun to look for them all because they have different colors depending on feng shui. The area was originally called Nankinmachi, but it was called Chinatown because the word Chinatown was written on the Zenrinmon Gate at the northwest end. Gates are usually built on the east-west, north-south, and north-west sides, but this one is tilted at a 45 degree angle. This is because this area was once rice paddy land called Yokohama Shinden, and the sections such as the roads on the ridges from that time have remained as they were.
Learn about Chinese Cuisine!!

If you go to Yokohama Chinatown, you’ll want to eat Chinese food, but you might not know which restaurant to go to. So, if you know about the four major Chinese cuisines, it will be easier to choose a restaurant. We have summarized them below for your reference.
Name | Overview | Characteristics of taste | Examples |
Cantonese cuisine | The most common cuisine in Chinatown | Lightly flavored and uses oyster sauce, making the most of the ingredients | Crab omelet, shumai, sweet and sour pork, yulin chicken, sesame dumplings, etc. |
Beijing cuisine | Cuisine developed by both the imperial court and the common people | Strongly flavored, using ginger, garlic, miso, soy sauce, tenmenjiang, etc. | Peking duck, jajang noodles, boiled dumplings, lamb shabu-shabu, almond tofu, etc. |
Shanghai cuisine | Uses seafood from the river | Simmered sweetly and thickly with sake, soy sauce, black vinegar, etc. | Shanghai crab, xiaolongbao, braised pork, Yangzhou fried rice, Shanghai fried noodles, etc. |
Sichuan cuisine | Many spicy dishes | Uses mala (Chinese pepper and chili pepper) | Mapo tofu, bang bang chicken, twice-cooked pork, dandan noodles, etc. |
