Rome is the well-known capital of Italy. It has built up a variety of history and culture from the Roman Empire to the present day. In addition to famous tourist spots such as the Colosseum and the Roman Forum, the city is dotted with ruins. There are many other places of interest such as the Mouth of Truth, Trevi Fountain, and Piazza di Spagna, but here we will introduce a route that covers the main points.

This is an ancient Roman amphitheater that has been in use since 80 AD. It is actually oval-shaped, and the main structure consists of three parts: the basement, the arena, and the spectator seating. In the basement, you can see the waiting area for warriors and wild animals that will fight in the arena. You can go to the arena by purchasing a ticket that allows you to see more places for 22 euros. Warriors and wild animals fought in this arena, and sometimes it was filled with water and boat battles were held. The spectator seating had four floors, and each floor had a different status. You can go up to the spectator seating to visit, and there are souvenir shops in one corner of the spectator seating and at the exit. It is a popular tourist spot, so it is best to make a reservation in advance.

③Arch of Constantine

This triumphal arch was built to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Constantine becoming emperor. The upper part of the arch has reliefs depicting battles during the time of the previous emperors Marcus Aurelius Antonius, Trajan, and Hadrian. It was used as a model for the Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel in the Tuileries Gardens in Paris.

This area, which means “Roman Citizen’s Square,” is home to many ancient Roman ruins. It is said to have been in use from the 8th century BC to the 5th century AD, and there are over 20 ruins remaining, including a triumphal arch, temples, and parliament buildings. In the past, Caesar gave speeches here, and successive emperors made triumphant returns here.

This hill can be entered from the Roman Forum. It is said to be the oldest of the seven hills that made up ancient Rome, and you can see nobles’ mansions, temples, aqueducts, and more.

These baths were completed in 216 by the Roman Emperor Caracalla. In fact, they had a library, a dance studio, and even something like a gym, so they were primarily used as leisure facilities. There was a procedure for bathing, where you first cooled your body in cold water, then washed away the sweat in a steam bath, then entered cold water, and finally had a slave give you a massage and wash you off, and you can see each of the facilities. Some of the original decorations remain, and the mosaics in particular are one of the highlights. Currently, it is also used as a venue for summer opera.

This is a circular sculpture in the Church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin. It became world famous after appearing in the movie “Roman Holiday.” There is a legend that if a liar puts their hand through the mouth of the sculpture, they will lose their hand.
The Mouth of Truth is not inside the church but outside, so you can see it through the fence. If you want to put your hand in and take a commemorative photo, you will need to line up and make a donation. The average waiting time is 1 hour if it is crowded, but if you just want to take a photo through the fence, it will take less than 5 minutes.

This 17th-century church has a Baroque exterior and appears at the beginning of Puccini’s opera “Tosca.” The interior is also beautiful, especially the ceiling frescoes, which make good use of natural light.

⑨Navona Square◎

Piazza Navona

It is a rectangular square stretching from north to south, originally a stadium that was turned into a square, hence its shape. There are three fountains in the square, the most famous of which is the “Fountain of the Four Rivers” with an obelisk on top, which personifies the Nile, Ganges, Danube, and Rio de la Plata rivers.

⑩Pantheon◎

This is a dome-shaped temple in Mars Square. The first Pantheon was built in 25 BC and was used as a place to worship various gods. The interior is designed so that sunlight enters through a hole at the top of the dome-shaped ceiling. It also contains the tombs of Italy’s first king, Vittorio Emanuele II, and the Italian painter Raphael.

⑪Trevi Fountain★

It is Rome’s largest Baroque fountain and one of its most popular tourist spots. It is integrated into the walls of Palazzo Poli and has a sculpture of Poseidon in the center.
It is said that if you turn your back and throw a coin into the fountain, your wish will come true. If you throw one coin, you will come back to Rome, if you throw two coins, you will be with your loved one forever, if you throw three coins, you will break up with your lover, wife or husband.

⑫Spanish Square★

This square got its name from the Spanish Embassy located nearby. The large staircase leading to the church appeared in the movie “Roman Holiday,” making it a very popular tourist spot. There was a scene in the movie where people ate gelato, but eating and drinking here is now prohibited.
At the top of the stairs is the Trinità dei Monti Church, built in the 16th century, and opposite the staircase is a shopping street where you can find brands like Gucci and Prada.

⑬People’s Square

Piazza del Popolo

This square has been used as the gateway to Rome since ancient times. In the center stands an obelisk, and behind it are the 17th-century Santa Maria in Montesanto Church and Santa Maria dei Miracoli Church, commonly known as the “Twin Churches,” and Porta del Popolo, the northern gateway through which Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo passed.
You can view the cityscape from Pincio Hill, which can be climbed from the square.
