【City description】

Vatican City is the smallest country in the world and is located within Rome. It is the headquarters of Catholicism and is famous for St. Peter’s Basilica and the square in front of it. Although it is called a country, only the clergy have Italian citizenship, and the staff live in Italy, specifically Rome. It has no military power, and security is provided by Swiss mercenaries, a permanently neutral country. Here we will introduce a route for sightseeing in Vatican City and the nearby Castel Sant’Angelo.

Vatican Museums

Admission fee: 20 euros
(comment ticket with ③)

Opening hour: 8 am – 8 pm

Closed: Sunday, national holidays

This is the world’s largest art museum adjacent to St. Peter’s Basilica. It is actually made up of more than 20 art galleries and museums, both large and small, so it would take a considerable amount of time to explore them all. Its origins date back to the 16th century, when Pope Julius II decided to create a museum after discovering the sculpture “Laocoön” in a vineyard near the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore. This “Laocoön” is one of the highlights of the Vatican Museums and is displayed in the Octagonal Courtyard.

Other works on display at the Pinacoteca include those by Leonardo da Vinci and Raphael. In the “Salon of Maps,” 16th-century maps of various parts of Italy are displayed on the walls of the corridor, and the ceiling is also lavishly decorated.

The Raphael Rooms are made up of four rooms, where you can see works painted directly on the walls and ceilings by Raphael and his students, as well as works that appear in history textbooks, such as “The School of Athens.”

It would take several hours to see all the exhibits at once, so we recommend picking out what you want to see in advance.
