【City description】
Venice is a popular tourist city in northeastern Italy. It is made up of 177 islands and about 150 canals, and is known as the “City of Water.” Therefore, the main means of transportation are walking and water buses. There are many sights to see, such as St. Mark’s Square with its cathedral and bell tower, the Bridge of Sighs, and the Rialto Bridge over the Grand Canal, but you can also find many picturesque views just by walking around aimlessly. In addition, the carnival held every February is world-famous for its masked festival. There are many things to enjoy, such as riding tourist gondolas or visiting slightly more remote areas, but here we will introduce a route that will take you around the main tourist spots in one day.

This 98.6m tall bell tower is located in a corner of St. Mark’s Square. It was originally built as a watchtower in the 9th century, but was later used as a bell tower in the 16th century after repairs following an earthquake. A golden statue of Gabriel is placed at the top. You can take an elevator to the top of the bell tower and enjoy a panoramic view of the city. However, as it is a popular tourist spot, you may have to queue, so it is recommended to go first thing in the morning.

This is the most famous square in Venice, where many tourist attractions are concentrated. In addition to the aforementioned bell tower, St. Mark’s Basilica, and the St. Mark’s Clock Tower (to the left of St. Mark’s Basilica), there are also restaurants, cafes, and boutiques.

This is the iconic cathedral of Venice located in St. Mark’s Square. It is said to be a masterpiece of Byzantine architecture built to worship St. Mark. Its luxurious decorations are applied not only to the exterior but also to the interior, and the frescoes on the golden ceiling are a highlight. If you go up to the second floor, you can view the square.

This museum displays the collection of the Venetian nobleman Correr. The exhibition space is on the second and third floors, and you can see not only his collection but also the interior of the noble family’s life. Among the exhibits, you can often see winged lions, which symbolize St. Mark and can also be seen in the decorations of St. Mark’s Basilica.

This museum mainly exhibits Roman and ancient Greek items. There are many sculptures on display, but there are also gold coins, weapons, dictionaries, etc. You can enter directly from the Correr Museum.

This Renaissance-style library was built in the 16th century and is one of the oldest libraries in Italy. Marciana means St. Mark. It was originally started when a poet donated a large number of his books to the Republic of Venice, and the library continued to collect books and grow to this size. The exhibition space is not accessed from the outside, but through the Correr Museum and the Archaeological Museum.

This palace was the political center of the Venetian Republic, housing the governor’s residence, the judicial, legislative, and executive branches. It was actually used as a palace from the 8th to 12th centuries. The exterior incorporates Gothic style, and once you enter through the courtyard, you’ll find yourself at the museum. The exhibits start with furniture, portraits of aristocrats, and religious paintings, and move on to paintings that tell the history of Venice. As it is a palace, it is luxuriously decorated, and the ceiling paintings are also a highlight. In the second half of the tour, you will cross the Bridge of Sighs and visit the prison on the opposite bank.

This is a white marble bridge that we crossed when we visited the Doge’s Palace. It was the bridge from the palace to the prison, and it got its name from the fact that the view from the window of this bridge was the last view outside for the prisoners.

This is a Benedictine church with the same name as the island, which was completed in the 17th century. The white exterior of the church is classical, but the interior incorporates Renaissance style, with white walls and beige tile floors, and you can see paintings such as “The Last Supper.” The brick bell tower was built in the 18th century, and you can take an elevator to the observation deck at the top. Monet also left behind a work depicting the twilight scene.

This is a church with a domed ceiling facing the Grand Canal. It is one of the iconic buildings of Venice and is said to be the most photographed place in the city. This church was built in the 17th century during the Black Death (plague) epidemic, and has a regular octagonal structure symbolizing the Virgin Mary. Therefore, when you enter, there is a large space in the center. The floor is covered with mosaic tiles, and candles of Christians are lined up.

This museum mainly exhibits Venetian paintings from the late Middle Ages to the 18th century. You can see works by various artists, including the Venetian master Titian. Another highlight is the luxurious decorations on the ceilings and walls of the exhibition rooms.

This bridge is located in front of the Accademia Gallery. It is one of the four bridges over the Grand Canal and is characterized by being made of wood. It was originally an iron bridge, but due to deterioration it was replaced with the current wooden bridge.
