【City description】
Barcelona is the second largest city in the country, located in the Catalonia region in western Spain. Facing the Mediterranean Sea, the city center is divided into wooden-patterned plots. As there are many things to see, we will introduce them in three different courses. Here, we will introduce a route that includes visiting Park Güell, designed by Antoni Gaudi, Casa Mila, and Casa Batlló, and going around the tourist spots while walking along the main street, La Rambla (① on the map below).

This park was created by Antoni Gaudi in cooperation with Count Güell and is one of Gaudi’s works registered as a World Heritage Site. It was originally planned to create a residential area in harmony with nature at a time when industrialization was progressing, but in the end, only Gaudi and Count Güell purchased the house.
The guard’s hut and gazebo are very famous for their shape that resembles a brown sponge with whipped cream on top. Currently, one can be visited inside, and the other is used as a souvenir shop. In front of it is a large staircase, and the lizard fountain there is also famous. There are many other things to see, such as the wavy handrail of the observation deck that overlooks them and the washerwomen’s corridor that looks like it was created naturally.

The area where these monuments are located is a paid zone, so you need to buy a ticket when you enter. In the free zone, the house purchased by Gaudi is used as a museum, but most of the area is a park.

This mansion was built by Gaudi in the Gràcia district, where there used to be a village that did not belong to Barcelona. It was built for the president of a brick and tile factory, so it uses a large amount of tiles in a color reminiscent of brick. Like Park Güell, which aimed to harmonize with nature, plants are painted throughout the tiles and interior. You can view the interior of the mansion on the first and second floors, and the third floor is an architectural museum. If you go up to the roof, you can get a close-up look at the distinctive tower.

Casa Milà
Time required: 1h

Opening hour: 9 am – 8h30 pm

Closed: 12/25
Gaudi built this building for the businessman Pere Mila and his wife in the early 1900s. It is also known as La Pedrera (The Quarry). The wavy exterior represents the Mediterranean Sea, and the black terraces on the balconies represent seaweed. As it is still used as a rental property, you can enter through a different entrance instead of the main entrance.
Once inside, you first take the elevator to the rooftop, then tour the Mila couple’s home before descending to the ground. The rooftop is lined with undulating scaffolding and undulating chimneys, making you feel like you are in the desert. If you go down one floor, you can see Gaudi’s architecture and furniture, and if you go further down, you can see the Mila couple’s home.
It is a popular tourist spot, so it is recommended to purchase tickets online in advance. There are several types of tickets, and they are slightly cheaper than buying them on site.

This building was renovated by Gaudi at the request of the great textile manufacturer Josep Baglio i Casanovas. This building is also registered as a World Heritage Site as one of Gaudi’s works.
The exterior is decorated with colorful coral-like walls, and the pillars on the first floor look like bones, so it is also called the “House of Bones.” There are various theories about the distinctive shape of the roof, such as a dragon riding on it or Harlequin’s hat. On the other hand, the interior is based on blue, and the windows are designed to look like air bubbles, so you can clearly see that it is themed on the sea.
The audio guide you receive at the entrance has an AR function, and when you hold the screen over the screen, 3D images will play. This is also a popular tourist spot, so it is recommended to purchase tickets online in advance.
