Auckland, New Zealand’s largest city, has so many tourist attractions that it’s impossible to see them all in one day. This site introduces four model courses that can be completed in half a day, so feel free to combine them to help you with your morning and afternoon sightseeing. This page introduces a model course for Devonport (② on the map below), an area that can be reached by boat from downtown Auckland.

Access

Devonport is across the water from Auckland city centre, so you’ll need to get there by boat. The pier is at Britomart, and boats depart every 30 minutes.

To board, you can either buy a ticket at reception, or load money onto an AT HOP card, a rechargeable public transport card, and board through the ticket gates. The fare is 7.40 NZD one way.

①Devonport Ferry Terminal

Turn right after leaving the ferry terminal ⇒ Continue along the coast ⇒ You will find the museum at the end

②Torpedo Bay Navy Museum

★Route Time required: 20 minutes
Return the way you came ⇒ On the way there is a sign for Devonport Museum, so turn right ⇒ At the fork in the road turn right ⇒ You will see the museum on your left, next to the park.

③Devonport Museum

★Route Time required: 5 minutes
Enter the park right next to the museum.

④Mount Cambria Reserve

★Route Time required: 30 minutes
Turn left after leaving the park ⇒ Turn left on the road ahead ⇒ There is an entrance to the mountain, so climb to the top

⑤Mount Victoria

★Route Time required: 30 minutes
Once you’ve descended the mountain and are on the street, turn left and go down the hill ⇒ Once you’re in town, turn right at the first intersection ⇒ Follow the first street that turns left ⇒ You’ll see a chocolate shop on your right

⑥Devonport Chocolates

★Route Time required: 5 minutes
Continue along the street ⇒ Return to the ferry terminal

Opening hour: 10 am – 5 pm

Closed: Good Friday, 12/25, 12/26

This museum was renovated from a former naval base and focuses on the activities of the New Zealand Navy before and after the world wars. There is also a space where you can see the city of Auckland.

Return the way you came ⇒ On the way there is a sign for Devonport Museum, so turn right ⇒ At the fork in the road turn right ⇒ You will see the museum on your left, next to the park.


③Devonport Museum

Time required: 30 min

Admission fee: 0 NZD

Opening hour: 10 am – 12 pm / 2 pm – 4 pm from Tuesday to Thursday

Closed: Monday, Friday

This is a folk museum where you can see the lives of the people of Devonport. It’s not that big, but it’s easy to understand, with models of houses and reproductions of life from centuries ago. The opening hours are quite limited, so be careful when you go.

Enter the park right next to the museum.


④Mount Cambria Reserve

Time required: 15 min

Admission fee: 0 NZD

This park is loved by locals and has palm trees that give it a tropical feel.

Turn left after leaving the park ⇒ Turn left on the road ahead ⇒ There is an entrance to the mountain, so climb to the top


⑤Mount Victoria★

Time required: 30 min

Admission fee: 0 NZD

This 196m high mountain in the Devonport area has a great view. You can see the ocean and Auckland from the summit. The cannons that were installed to protect the area from enemies still remain today.

This is a famous chocolate shop in Devonport. They have a wide selection of products, from chocolate bars of various flavors to souvenirs. They also have a branch in downtown Auckland.
