Maokong is an area in the mountainous region in the southeast of Taipei. You can get there by cable car, and you can get a panoramic view of Taipei city. It is also a popular place for locals, as it is a tea producing area, and there are museums and tea shops. You can also go to a temple on the cable car to Maokong.

【Start】

★Route Time required: 10 minutes
We will head to Maokong by cable car. You can get to the cable car station by train, Taipei MRT. Get off at Zoo Station, the last stop on the Wenhu Line (brown line), and follow the guide map and go straight for about 10 minutes until you see the cable car station on your left.

①Maokong Gondola

★Route Time required: 20 minutes
Travel by cable car.

②Maokong Gondola Zhinan Temple Station

★Route Time required: 10 minutes
After getting off the cable car, follow the signs along the path and you will see the first of the three Zhinan Temples.

③Lingxiao Palace

★Route Time required: 5 minutes
Continue along the path to the second temple.

④Zhinan Temple

★Route Time required: 5 minutes
Continue along the path to the final temple.

⑤Mahavira Hall

★Route Time required: 15 minutes
Continue along the road until you return to the cable car station, where you can board the cable car to head to Maokong.

⑥Maokong Station

★Route Time required: 5 minutes
Take the BR15, S10 or Maokong Left bus from the bus stop in front of the station (15 TWD). Get off at the Tea Promotion Center and walk a little further until you see the Tea Museum on your right. It’s about a 20-minute walk, but we recommend taking the bus since you’ll have to walk to the Taiwanese-style cafe, Tea Art House, on your way back.

⑦Taipei Tea Promotion Center

★Route Time required: 20 minutes
Return to the ropeway station by retracing the same path as the bus. There are tea houses here and there along the way, so we recommend stopping by any that catch your eye. When you order tea at a tea house, you pay for the hot water and tea leaves. You can take home any leftover tea leaves.

Maokong Station

★Route Time required: 20 minutes
Take the cable car back to Taipei.

Purchase your ticket here and board the cable car. In this example itinerary, you first get off at Zhinan Temple, where there is a temple, and then take the cable car again to the Maokong area, so the price is for a one-day pass.

One-third of the gondolas have crystal cabins with glass floors, and if you would like to use these gondolas, you will need to pay an additional 50 TWD.

②Maokong Gondola Zhinan Temple Station

This is where you get off the cable car.

After getting off the cable car, follow the signs along the path and you will see the first of the three Zhinan Temples.


③Lingxiao Palace★

Zhinan Temple, which includes the Lingxiao Hall, is a temple dedicated to Lu Dongbin, one of the Eight Immortals of Taoism. The Lingxiao Hall is a temple dedicated to the Jade Emperor, the supreme deity of Taoism.

At the back is the Taisui Hall, where 60 Taisui gods are enshrined. These represent the sixty sexagenary cycles, combining the twelve Chinese zodiac signs and the ten heavenly stems of Jia, Yi, and Bing.

④Zhinan Temple★

This is the main hall where Lu Dong Bin is enshrined. Lu Dong Bin was called Chunyang Zhenren, which is how the temple got its name. Inside is the longest sutra in Taiwan, made from a single piece of wood, which is said to contain not only the past but also the future.

Continue along the path to the final temple.


⑤Mahavira Hall★

Opening hour: 6 am – 8 pm

The last temple we visited has an atmosphere different from the others, such as elephant statues. This is due to the influence of the Japanese colonial period, when Taoism was suppressed and Buddhism was promoted. Inside is the golden Shaka Nyorai statue, a national treasure of Thailand donated by Thailand, as well as other Buddhist items such as Hotei and Guan Yu.

Continue along the road until you return to the cable car station, where you can board the cable car to head to Maokong.


⑥Maokong Station

This is where you get off the cable car.

This is a museum where you can learn about the Tieguanyin tea grown in Maokong. Machines used in the cultivation and production of tea leaves are also on display, so you can learn about tea. You can also sample Tieguanyin tea.
