How to Apply for a New Zealand Tourist Visa; Step by Step Guide for Travelers

Christchurch Arts Centre

If you are staying in New Zealand for tourism purposes, you will need to apply for a visa called NZeTA. You can ask a travel agency to do it for you, but here we will show you how to apply for it yourself.

What is NZeTA?

Even if you are staying in New Zealand for a short period of time, you will need to apply for a visa, which is called an NZeTA. A visa is necessary for immigration inspection, and immigration officers check whether it is okay to let a person enter the country. Once you apply for an NZeTA, it is valid for two years. However, if your stay exceeds three months, you will need to obtain the relevant visa, and if you change your passport, you will need to apply again.

Who needs to apply for NZeTA?

So who needs to apply for this visa?

・Staying for 3 months or less

・Australian permanent residents, excluding Australian citizens

・Arriving on a cruise ship

・Those transiting through Auckland International Airport

In short, this visa is required for people traveling to New Zealand for less than three months. However, in reality, this visa is also required for those studying abroad, working, or on official business for less than three months. On the other hand, if you are staying for more than three months, you must obtain a visa that matches the purpose of your stay (student visa, working holiday visa, work visa, etc.).

How to apply for NZeTA

NZeTA Home Page

You can apply for NZeTA via their website or their app.

In either case, you will need the following to apply:

・Passport

・Credit card (VISA or Master Card)

・Email address

・Face photo data

・Application fee

In fact, the application fee is different between the website and the app.

・Homepage: 23 NZD

・App: 17 NZD

The app is cheaper, but the reviews don’t seem to be as good.

Visa Application Process

I made the reservation via their website using my computer, so I’ll show you how.

①Nationality

NZeTA homepage Nationality input screen

First, enter your nationality as stated on your passport.

②Place of Birth and Email Address

③Applicant Information

Next, enter the applicant’s information.

④Photo of your face

Next, you’ll need to register a photo of your face. There are some notes to keep in mind, but it’s the same idea as a passport photo. If you’re using a computer, upload the data, and if you’re using the app, launch the camera app and take a photo. Once you’ve registered, the photo will be checked to see if there are any problems, and if there are no problems, you can proceed to the next step.

In my case, the lighting was dim and I had to try again several times. After some research, I found that glasses can sometimes cause the photo to be recognized properly, so if this is the case, try taking them off and taking the photo.

⑤Verify your Registration Information

Once you have registered your face photo, check that the information you have registered is correct. In particular, if the information on your passport is different from the information on your passport, your application may not be approved, so be sure to check carefully.

⑥Confirmation of Personal Information Handling

Once you have confirmed the details, an English message will appear, which basically explains how the personal information you have just registered will be handled. It explains that the information will be handled in accordance with the provisions of the Personal Information Protection Act. Please note that the application fee cannot be refunded. Check the privacy policy, check the checkbox, and proceed to the next step.

⑦Payment

The last step is to pay the application fee. Enter your credit card information and make the payment. Once this is done, your application will be complete.

What happens after you apply?

Applying for a visa is not the end of the process. From here, they will check whether it is OK to let you into the country. If your application is rejected, you will not be able to enter the country. However, you will have to wait for the result.

Usually, the result will be sent to the registered email address within 72 hours of application. In my case, the result came about 4 hours after I applied. You can also change the registered information and check the progress of your application on the website.

Once your visa is granted, there is nothing else to do. Your application will be registered in the New Zealand immigration database, so there is nothing to print here. You will simply go through immigration at the New Zealand airport, just like any other country that does not require a tourist visa.

Summary

That’s how to apply for the NZeTA visa required for travel to New Zealand. The most difficult part was that my photo wasn’t reflected properly. The validity period is two years, and it may take 72 hours for the results to be released, so if you decide to travel to New Zealand, you may want to start the process early. However, please note that refunds are not available after application.
