Built in 1738, this is the oldest temple in Taipei. Originally a Buddhist temple, it incorporated Confucianism and Taoism and now enshrines over 100 gods. The main deity is the Bodhisattva Kannon, enshrined in the main hall. It is said that although the main hall was damaged during World War II, this Bodhisattva statue remained. There is a procedure for praying, so please follow the steps below.

① Enter through the Dragon Gate on the right with your left foot without stepping on the threshold.

② Offer prayers in front of the Sanchuan Hall, located in front of the Main Hall on the left. At this time, recite your name, date of birth, and address in your mind and bow three times.

③ Offer prayers in the same way at the 4th Main Hall.

④ Proceed to the right of the Main Hall and offer prayers in the same order to Wenchang Emperor’s Hall ⇒ Tieng Shengmu Hall ⇒ Guan Sheng Emperor’s Hall.

After praying, you draw your fortune slip, which also has a procedure.

bamboo straw (Poe)

① Take two crescent-shaped red pieces of wood called poe.

② Introduce yourself and recite your wish just like when praying, then throw the poe at your feet. If you get one raised side and one flat side, draw a fortune. The fortune slips are larger than those in Japan and contain many red sticks. If both sides are the same and you get a NG, you have three chances to throw it again. If you get a NG all three times, you can rethrow it and think about your wish and throw the poe again.

③ Remember the number on the fortune slip and throw it again to see if it’s okay.

④ If you get two different sides within three tries, give the number to the person at the drawer and receive your fortune.

⑤ There is an explanation desk nearby so you can get an explanation of the contents.

Baoan Temple enshrines Baosheng Dadi, the god of medicine, and is said to bring good health and longevity. Baosheng Dadi was a real person in China who was skilled in medicine and not only saved many people, but is also said to have treated epidemics as a spirit after death. His temple was built in China during the Song Dynasty, and when an epidemic broke out in Taiwan, a branch of his spirit was sent to Taiwan to build this temple. At first, it was a simple temple, but after repeated renovations, it took on its current form and was certified as a national second-class historic site in 2018.

The temple’s luxurious architecture incorporates traditional Chinese architectural styles of immigrants throughout. Dragons are wrapped around the pillars on the left and right of the Sanchuan Hall just inside the entrance, making it the oldest sculpture in the temple, created in the early 19th century. In addition, the murals in the main hall were created by Pan Li-shui and are one of his masterpieces.
