Liège

・Long stairs with a panoramic view of the town
【City description】
It is Belgium’s fifth largest city, located in the Walloon region of eastern Belgium. Although it is an industrial city, it was once a religious city, so there are many churches. One of Belgium’s seven treasures is on display in the church. The Belgian waffle that is known in Japan is a style that originated here in Liege. Every year on August 15th, a grand parade is held with costumed people.

This church has a distinctive exterior using white and red. It was built in the Ottoman style between the 11th and 12th centuries, and in contrast to its flashy exterior, the interior is chic with Baroque-style white walls and black floors. Inside the church, there is a baptismal font made by Regnier de Huy, one of Belgium’s seven treasures. The baptismal font depicts John’s preaching and four baptisms, and is supported by carvings of 10 oxen. In addition, there is also a pilgrimage route from Le Puy-en-Velay in France to Santiago de Compostela in Spain, and a bronze scallop shell, the symbol of this route, is placed on the floor as a landmark.
