Auckland, the largest city in New Zealand, has public transportation such as buses, trains, and boats. In fact, you cannot use cash to ride public buses. Here we will introduce how to ride public transportation. We will also introduce how to travel from the airport to the city.

Public Transport in Auckland
Auckland’s public transport includes buses, trains and boats, but you will mainly use the bus to tour the city. However, you cannot pay the driver when you board. Auckland’s public transport is available by loading money onto the AT HOP card. Currently, you can also use the app, but here we will introduce how to use the card. With this AT HOP card, you can use buses, trains and boats.
How to Purchase an AT HOP Card

AT HOP cards can be purchased not only at major stations and ferry terminals, but also at convenience stores around the city.
You can find out where you can purchase them on the following website:
I bought it at the Victoria St Lotto convenience store next to the Sky Tower. There is a sign at the register saying that you can buy it, so just tell the staff that you want to buy it.
When you purchase the card, you will be asked how much you want to charge. By the way, if you want to go around all four courses introduced on my site, you will need 30 NZD. The card itself costs 5 NZD, so you will need a total of 35 NZD. By the way, there is a slight discount on the regular price for the AT HOP card, so the price may differ from the price you find online.
How to charge your AT HOP Card
When the amount of money you have loaded is low, you will need to load it up. In fact, just because you can buy a card doesn’t mean you can load it up at the same place. You can load and buy cards at Victoria St Lotto, which I introduced earlier, but if you want to load it up somewhere else, you need to be careful. You can check whether you can load it up by checking the aforementioned site. Apart from in-store machines, there are machines at stations and ferry terminals, so you can load it up yourself.
How to board the bus

To board a public bus, you board from the front and touch your AT HOP card to the terminal near the driver’s seat. When you get off, you must do the same at the center of the bus and touch your card to the terminal to complete the payment before getting off. If you do not do this, you will be charged more the next time you board.
The problem with public buses is that they don’t show where the next bus stop is. There are only announcements on the bus, so if you’re not familiar with the area, you won’t know where you are, and in the worst case scenario, you might pass the place where you want to get off. That’s where the AT HOP app comes in handy.
Here’s how to use it:
①Connect to Wi-Fi at a hotel or other location, turn on location services, and open the app to display your current location.
②Search for a route to display the route.
Now location information works even when there is no Wi-Fi connection, so your current location will be updated even when you are on the bus. Your current location will be updated according to the route you are on, so when you get close to your destination, you can press the buzzer to get off without making a mistake.
How to get on the boat or train

Auckland is a seaside town and boats come and go frequently. Boats also depart from Devonport, a popular tourist spot, every 30 minutes.
For tourist information on Devonport, please see here.
Just like with buses, you touch the terminal when you get on and off the boat. The Auckland ferry terminal has a ticket gate, so you can use it the same way as a train. There are not many opportunities to use the train for sightseeing, but there is a station at Britomart near the ferry terminal.
How to get from the airport to the city
The shuttle bus is convenient for getting from Auckland Airport to the city. If you try to use public transportation, there are no direct flights and the travel time is twice as long as the shuttle bus, so I don’t recommend it. There are many shuttle bus companies, but here we will introduce the circular shuttle bus Sky Drive.

The outline of SkyDrive is as follows:
Stop locations:
Sky City ⇒ Auckland Airport (domestic) ⇒ Auckland Airport (international) ⇒ Sky City
*Sky City is right next to the Sky Tower
Time required between airport and Sky City:
Approximately 30 minutes
Fee:
20 NZD one way
Payment method:
Pay to the driver (card only)
Operating hours:
1 every 30 minutes between 5 am and 10h30 pm
You can make a reservation in advance on their website, but it is not required. Moreover, it is better not to make a reservation since arrival times are dependent on the flight.
Once you make a reservation, you will receive a QR code via email, which you will need to show to the driver when boarding.
Boarding point from the International Terminal
From the arrivals exit, exit the airport at Exit 8. After crossing one road, you will see the bus stop on your left. There is no timetable, and the bus comes every 30 minutes, so please be patient.
Sky City boarding location
The bus stops at the long-distance bus terminal in Sky City, but there is no bus stop. The bus stops in front of the toilets inside the bus terminal.
