Azay-le-Rideau Castle

Azay-le-Rideau

Check Point
・Castle reflected on the water surface

・Masterpieces of the early Renaissance

【Castle description】

It’s a castle on the banks of the Indre river in the Loire region. When we compare this castle with other castles in this region, it’s small and we don’t take much time for the visit. But it’s one of masterpieces in the beginning of the Renaissance and the castle reflected on the mirror of the water is beautiful.

Château d’Azay-le-Rideau

Time required: 40 min

This castle was built in the 16th century and has strong Italian influences. Gilles Berthelot, the royal treasurer and secretary, purchased and renovated this estate and fortress upon his promotion. It was later confiscated by Francis I, and his coat of arms, the salamander, can be seen throughout the castle. Although it has changed hands since then, it is currently owned by the government. Inside, you can see various rooms including Gilles Berthelot’s bedroom and a portrait of François I.
